FEED YOUR SKIN: Leafy Greens

Ask any dietician, doctor, or mom, and they’ll all agree that eating leafy greens, like spinach and kale, is super beneficial to your over all health. Both are packed full of essential vitamins and fiber, and are powerful antioxidants, which, in terms of our skin, help to fight the signs of aging and prevent wrinkles.

Spinach

It made Popeye strong, but little did Olive Oyl know, it could have seriously helped her skin after all those days in the sun pining over her sailor boyfriend. Spinach is an amazing source for vitamin A, C, and beta-carotene, which are all antioxidants that help to neutralize free radicals (the underlying culprit of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of gaining) created by sun exposure. Spinach is also an anti-inflammatory and helps retain moisture in the skin.

Kale

It seems like everywhere you click on the Internet, there is someone talking about kale. And for good reason! When it comes to the skin, Kale’s high levels of vitamins A, K, and C aid in repairing tissue, reducing dark circles around the eyes, repairing free radical damage, and improving skin elasticity.

You can’t deny the good-for-you-power of these two super foods, and so, if you’re like us, you’ll want to eat as much as you can! You’re probably asking: is there a way to get kale to taste good? And our answer to you: try a Glowing Green Smoothie!

One of our style and health icons is Kimberly Snyder (author of the Beauty Detox Solution) who first introduced us to the GGS, and since discovering it we drink one everyday. It might look a bit intimidating when you first blend one up (in our favorite appliance, the Vitamix!), but once you start sipping you’ll find that it tastes good and makes you feel (and look!) even better.

Glowing Green Smoothie the Sally B Way (note: use the organic ingredients if possible!)

2-3 handfuls of chopped kale

1 handful of chopped spinach

1 half handful fresh cilantro

1 half handful fresh parsley

Juice of one lemon

4-5 celery sticks

1 Banana

1 Apple

Stevia to taste

1 packet frozen acai berries (optional)

Add all the ingredients to a blender with some ice and water and blend until well mixed. Continue to add water until you reach desired consistency.  Share with family and loved ones!
